Ultrasound

Please wear comfortable clothes in preparation for your ultrasound exam. In some cases you may be asked to wear a hospital gown.

Pelvic or pregnancy ultrasounds: A FULL urinary bladder is essential. Two hours before examination empty bladder and drink six large glasses (8 oz.) of water 1 to 2 hours prior to appointment time and hold - do not empty bladder after this (if absolutely necessary, empty bladder a little while counting to 5 and then stop). If you are having a biophysical profile (BPP) please eat one hour before appointment time.

Abdominal: Most ultrasound examinations of the upper abdomen require that you refrain from eating, drinking or smoking 6 hours before the exam.

Abdomen and pelvis: Do not eat 6 hours before examination. 2 hours before appointment empty bladder and drink six large (8oz.) glasses of water.

Kidney exams: Fast for 6 hours before the exam, as well as filling your bladder with 4 glasses of water 2 hours before the exam.
